A hero, Dante, battles some demons his brother Vergil sends against him. When Dante defeats these creatures, a giant tower erupts out of the ground near his shop. He senses his brother somewhere in the tower. He then enters the tower fighting various demons and monsters whose life energy transforms into weapons after he defeats them. These weapons are useful on subsequent levels.
But in the course of fighting through the tower and battling his brother, Dante learns that a man named Arkham is manipulating them in order to reactivate the tower, steal a powerful sword from the demon world, and use it to rule over the earth. Dante and Vergil eventually defeat the Arkham, then fight over the powerful sword, called the Force Edge. Dante wins the sword, and his brother chooses to stay behind in the demon world.
The plot is thin, but it drives the action from level to level and boss to boss. In general the levels become more difficult. In Japan the game had a hard mode, which was quite difficult. Capcom made the decision to convert this into the normal mode in the North American release. The hardest level in North America was really hard, maybe too hard.
